(March 4, 2023) It might be hard to imagine, given the current, cutthroat state of the pickup truck segment, but there was once a time when these task-focused haulers were largely an afterthought to the bean counters in Detroit. Fifty years ago, before King Ranches and Longhorns lined their interiors with enough leather to reach from Lansing to Laredo, trucks were barebones affairs built to get the job done and sold to customers who honestly weren’t expected to use them as daily drivers.

The Streets of America in the 1950s

(February 5, 2023) This video takes an interesting look back at 1950s and early 1960s downtown America. The shops and storefronts of the little towns were the personification of mid-century America. But the highlight of the video is the many 1950s cars and pickup trucks on the streets and parked at a downtown full-service gas station. It is worth the eight minutes.

(January 16, 2023) In the late 1980s, Chrysler transformed its Town & Country, and most other station wagons it produced, by reimagining them into its first-generation minivans, built on the front-wheel-drive S platform and sharing powertrain with Lee Iacocca’s ubiquitous K-cars. That’s notable because for most of the time leading up to then, the Town & Country was a massive, luxury-packed conventional station wagon with a longitudinal layout and an overall length that stretched right out of sight.
