1933 Auburn 12-165 Salon Speedster
(September 25, 2024) Mecum Dallas 2024 welcomed large crowds and competitive bidding all four days, Sept. 4-7, achieving total overall sales of $47 million and becoming the second biggest Dallas auction in Mecum’s decade-plus of holding events in the city. In total, 1,656 lots crossed the block at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center with 1,218 selling for an admirable sell-through rate of 74%.
Unique themes ranging from prewar rarities to single-marque collections emerged in Dallas, adding another layer of intrigue to the long-running Texas-based event.
Sales in Dallas were led by the 1933 Auburn 12-165 Salon Speedster from the headlining Paul L. Kelsey, Kelsey Automotive Museum Collection. The rare antique auto is one of only 14 produced and one of just five known to still exist, and it ultimately demanded a sale price of $990,000.

Many of the Kelsey offerings hailed from the prewar era and early 1900s, dating as far back as an 1899 Mobile Steamer Roadster. Other top sales in Dallas included a trio of Corvettes —including the last C7 ZR1 produced that sold for $410,000 — as well as a 1968 Shelby GT500KR Convertible that brought $330,000 and a 2021 Lamborghini Huracan STO Coupe that sold for $324,500.
Among the total 15 private collections on offer in Dallas, several included strong themes that succeeded in attracting brand-loyal enthusiasts eager for high-quality examples of favorite marques and models. The Fabulous Fords Collection included 27 of the coveted Mustang and Shelby lines, while The Angelone Z Car Collection presented an excellent assemblage of eight Datsun and Nissan “Z” models.

The nine vehicles of the Destin Florida Cars group included mostly modern high-performance sports and muscle cars, two of which landed among the auction’s top sellers including a 2008 Ferrari 430 Scuderia and the 2008 Mercedes-Benz McLaren SLR Roadster selling for $286,000 each. Mopars, movie cars and more were also highlights among Dallas collection offerings.
